The main difference is the shape of the mechanism
Round-ring mechanisms use circular rings. D-ring mechanisms have a straighter page-holding side and a curved opening side. That geometry affects how the paper stack sits inside the binder and can influence capacity and page alignment.
When D-rings are worth considering
D-rings are often considered for thicker information sets because the pages can sit along the straight portion of the mechanism. They can also create a more squared-off stack when the binder is closed. The exact capacity still depends on the mechanism size and the thickness of the contents.
When round rings make sense
Round rings are a familiar general-purpose option and can work well for many manuals, presentations and frequently updated documents. For lighter content sets, the simpler mechanism may be all the project needs.
Choose based on the complete project
